A fun and delicious black velvet cake paired with blackberry compote and creamy black cocoa frosting, perfect for Halloween celebrations.

- 2 cups All purpose flour (sifted)
- 3/4 cup Black cocoa powder (sifted)
- 2 tsp Baking soda
- 1 tsp Baking powder
- 1 tsp Salt
- 2 Eggs (room temperature)
- 1 cup Buttermilk (room temperature)
- 1 cup Coffee (hot)
- 1/2 cup Canola oil
- 2 tsp Vanilla extract
- 2 cups Fresh blackberries
- 2 tbsp White granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp Fresh lemon juice
- 1 tsp Lemon zest
- 1 Cinnamon stick
- 1/4 cup Water
- 1 tbsp Cornstarch
- 8 oz Cream cheese (softened)
- 1/2 cup Unsalted butter (softened)
- 3 cups Powdered sugar (sifted)
- 1 cup Black cocoa powder (sifted)
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract
- Chocolate skulls
- Fresh blackberries
- Dried rose petals
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Combine sugar, flour, black cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
- Whisk the eggs, buttermilk, hot coffee, canola oil, and vanilla extract in another bowl.
- Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely.
- In a small saucepan, combine blackberries, sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, cinnamon stick, and water for the blackberry compote. Cook over medium heat until thickened, about 10 minutes.
- Mix cornstarch with a tablespoon of water in a separate bowl, then add it to the pot. Stir until thickened and remove from heat. Let cool.
- Beat cream cheese and butter together until smooth for the frosting.
- Gradually add powdered sugar, black cocoa powder, salt, and vanilla extract, mixing until creamy.
- Assemble the cake by placing one layer on a platter, spreading blackberry compote and frosting, adding the second layer, and covering with remaining frosting. Decorate with chocolate skulls, fresh blackberries, and dried rose petals.
Notes
Sift flour and cocoa powder for a light and fluffy texture. Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature for easier mixing. Let cake cool completely before frosting.
